The Divine Grandfather is the elder masculine aspect available to us in all things, internally and externally. We see him in the fire, the thunder and lightning, by the woodshed and sometimes down the pub. We feel his wise humour and protective embrace. We feel his ability to see directly into the truth of things. The Divine Grandfather is in a season of wisdom and of leadership, he reminds us to take things both more and less seriously than we are inclined to do.

We might call upon the Divine Grandfather when we need a wise elder to point us forwards, when we need to feel that we are loved by the masculine in a clean and unconditional way, when we wish for someone who's walked the way before us draw us close and tell us an alchemical story. We might call on the Divine Grandfather when we are moving through milestones and transitions that require ceremony and witnessing. We might call on the Divine Grandfather to help us mend or fill gaps around our experience of being fathered. We might call upon this energy when we need wise and rooted power to become the leaders that each of us are in our own lives.

Some examples of deities that embody the Divine Grandfather:

Odin, Apollo, Dagda, Saba, Vishnu

How to work with this archetype:

Place him on your altar, this signals to the Divine Grandfather internally and externally that he is being called in.

Make a commitment to him, to this space within you and to the experience of her outwardly, it's ok if you forget a day or a week. Just like when you meditate and thoughts come in – as soon as you notice them try to come back to stillness. If you fall off the wagon of your commitment, as soon as you notice; just hop right back in.

Some commitment suggestions:

  • Light a candle each day and call upon the Divine Grandfather

  • Bring offerings each week for him on your altar

  • Have a fire ideally outside, if not perhaps light a candle and sit and stare into the flames

  • Create or engage in a series of rituals to mark initiatory phases in your life and that of the world

  • Walk often, and eat and drink well - you are loved

  • Look at the sky often, find a tree that feels like a good place to gaze at the sky, sit with your back to it and let it support you

Make your commitment to do one or some of these daily, weekly, monthly or as much as you can across this entire year.

Notice how archetypes of the Divine Grandfather appear in dreams and through synchronicities as you do this work, begin to spot patterns and allow your intuition to guide you, this is a powerful archetype to be working with.
